Bushy, evergreen shrub or small tree Height: up to 10 m (1) Leaves: Ovate, simple and alternately arranged (1), with acute tip and serrated margin and free lateral stipules. Flowers: Bisexual, large and showy, stalked and arising singly from the upper leaf axil (1). The petals could be single (5-petalled) to double or multiple whorl and in different sizes, shapes and colors, depending on its cultivar. Typically, it is red. Sepals are joined in a lobed cup. the superior ovary are attached to a long style with 5-stigmas and with several stamens attached to the style.
